I get so many unwanted political texts. I suspect, as someone who rarely votes for Democrats or Republicans, I get them from “both sides” because their algorithm doesn’t know where to place me.
The latest onslaught is from “People for an Affordable WA.” First, check out their “about” page, where they note their “Top 5 Contributors: WA Alliance for a Competitive Economy, Microsoft, Madrona, T-Mobile, Amazon.” I know who Microsoft, T-Mobile, and Amazon are; corporate monoliths that pay almost no taxes to WA State or the Federal government.
Who is the WA Alliance for a Competitive Economy? They are a 501(c)6, meaning they are a “business league” or “chamber of commerce.” From what I can tell, they were created solely to fight against corporate taxes1, and often they will argue against individual taxes to make the case for “no taxes.”
Who is Madrona? It’s not immediately clear because there are a number of financial institutions with the short name “Madrona.” I believe it’s this venture capital firm.
These are corporations, business associations, and venture capital firms who don’t want more taxes. They also want less government spending (though, I’m sure they’ll continue to receive government “handouts”). Just read their leader: “WA State needs lower costs, not higher taxes.”
Shouldn’t People for an Affordable WA have a record of my Green Party and Democratic Socialist of America associations? Shouldn’t they avoid contacting me?
Apparently, no, so here’s my open letter to two people named “Sarah” and “Jessica” who have texted me from the number 360.300.2630 as reps for People for an Affordable WA:
Open Letter to People for an Affordable WA
Dear Corporatists Sarah & Jessica:
Your AI intelligence and research skills are an insult. A casual look into my political associations should have been enough to avoid texting me multiple times.
A more affordable WA for residents would require wealth redistribution in addition to businesses and wealthy individuals—like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos—financially supporting the community.
I hope I live to see Microsoft destroyed by open-source applications. I hope to see T-Mobile bought by the government and made a public service. I hope to see Amazon disappear on a rocket to nowhere. I hope the folks at Madrona end up in a state or federally owned prison. And I hope to live to see the day when Chambers of Commerce are branches of government.
I hope Washington State prioritizes its lands and its people over corporate profits. I hope to see a redistribution of wealth and a day when everyone can afford food/housing and attend college in WA for free.
I want fewer or no tax benefits, write-offs, and so forth. I’m ready for an income tax, a corporate tax, a lower inheritance tax, and a tiered sales tax. Better yet, I’m ready for socialism.
Here’s one of their publications they funded from 2005 highlight why they believe taxes would harm the WA State economy: https://researchcouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/washacetaxbriefjan05.pdf
Here's what I sent to Jeff Bezos about Amazon's support of "People for an Affordable WA,"
To: Jeff @ amazon .com
Dear Jeff:
I am disgusted by Amazon's support of People for an Affordable WA--specifically that your company is one of the top five financial supporters. Washington corporations benefit immensely from the state's low to zero tax rate for corporations. Yet, as the state looks to balance its budget, your company, along with T-Mobile and Microsoft, are encouraging more cuts to people and services through your financial support of People for an Affordable WA, and their goal of preventing more taxes in WA. Classic PROFIT over PEOPLE.
It is time for Amazon, and corporations like Amazon, to pay taxes to Washington State.
Here's my public post about this initiative and Amazon's associations: https://open.substack.com/pub/candidetoday/p/read-my-lips-more-taxes?r=91pkw&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
I intend to continue to cross-post and remind folks which businesses are defunding Washingtonians.
Sincerely,
Alex
